GLRAR supporters met in Lone Pine Memorial Park Tuncurry on Monday 9th May and proceeded to walk across the bridge to Forster and back with banners reading “Bring Them Here” and also “Close Nauru and Manus Island” detention centres.
The decision by the Papua New Guinea supreme court to order the closure of Manus Island detention centre has prompted the campaign.  The judgement also ruled that it was illegal to detain these men in PNG because they were intending to go to Australia so were the responsibility of the Australian government  The Australian government’s reaction to this ruling is to try and negotiate with another third world country to take the 800 or so detainees still on Manus
We are still displaying the Let Them Stay banner as a young Somali woman has been returned to Nauru. Her return to Nauru has so distressed her that she self immolated last week and is in a Brisbane hospital in a critical condition. GLRAR is determined to continue opposition to the present policies of the government and the opposition.
