800th Anniversary of Magna Carta signing.

The 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta was celebrated in Britain this week. It was attended by many dignitaries including the Queen and British Prime Minister, David Cameron. In praise of the charter that has framed the Democratic System of Government for many countries of the world, Mr Cameron said that our Human Rights are something that we must nurture and cherish. In Australia at a similar function to celebrate the Magna Carta, the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, Professor Gillian Triggs, commented that the people of Australia should have a Charter of Rights. Many western democracies have such a charter but in spite of several attempts by community movements, Australia does not have its own Charter of Rights.
